Dead Monks and Their Girlfriends

Murals under a bridge and in various other places around the former Liesilles Abbey, not far from Lille, France.

The Liessies Abbey was built in the 11th century and destroyed during the French Revolution. All that is left now is a magnificent park, build on marshes and accessible through a criss-cross of levied roads. The rubble of the compound's library, refectory, etc. became the substance of these roads. It's enough to scratch the ground and the fresh red color of crushed brick is revealed. Rows of monumental trees line the levy sides, preventing the elevated roads from disintegration. In some places bridges remain, the only masonry that was not razed.

The "Dead Monks and Their Girlfriends" drawings are hidden under these bridges. Achimescu created them during an artist's workshop in the fall of 1999. These drawings constitute the invisible part of his contribution to the workshop and exhibition. The visible part consists of three murals in contemporary buildings near the abbey gate.

The project was made possible by generous support by ARIAP, Marie-Jo Pillette and Olivier Dupont
