The Sligo Project Sketches

part of Achimescu's exhibition project for the 2001 show at the Model Arts Centre in Sligo, Ireland, curated by Suzanne Woods
in its early stages this project was meant for the Drawing Center in NY

Dear Suzanne,

Most of my pieces are made in such a way that they can be arranged in a site-specific manner.
For example, the Shelter tape and its inhabitants can evade from the case.
The Cities can hang at different levels, in thicker or more spread-out clusters, with or without fans that move them by means of air currents.
The Kukes Love Parade can cover most of a room's surface (I am thinking of the smaller one upstairs, near the small staircase) but can also be split into several "sub-parades" or arranged in a march-like snake.
The Bunai prints can be wall-mounted or displayed back-to-back, hanging from the ceiling.

As a whole, I see my "production" work as being completed prior my arrival in Sligo. The time of the residency would be then used solely for tailoring the existing installations for the volumes of the Model Art Centre's Galleries: configuring the clothes-line-like drawings to fit the dimensions of the rooms, building the supporting networks, setting the Love Parade (it takes a long time:-)

Here are some sketches:

most of the "City-like" installations hang on a network of more or less loose strings

larger installations play with the viewer's perception of size (through the multitude of small elements)

sometimes it is interesting to climb on stairs that provide you with a different perspective

one of the hanging structure projects, a cube - shaped phalanx of 2000 creatures

from bottom to top:1) unrolling the creatures from a blanket, 2)clearing the ropes, 3) boiling a tea under the structure

lead weights at the end of strings provide stability
